Ten years ago, at 37-years-old, I started using a supplement called Hyaluronic Acid for my arthritis. It works so well I forget my achy joints at times. But, another funny thing happened — customers started asking if I had had a face lift, and a couple even checked for surgical scars!  I found out HA is also great for aging skin. Now (at 47!) I bathe in it internally and externally.

Hyaluronic Acid is nothing to be afraid of. It’s a natural substance found in the body that we lose as we age, or gets destroyed by sun exposure, causing dry skin and wrinkles. It is great for skin care because of its ability to retain water, as much as 500 - 1000 times its own weight. It is this property of HA that makes skin moist, soft, and elastic, thereby maintaining a more youthful appearance.

Hyaluronic Acid is now available in many skin care products and is touted for anti-aging skin care. You know the filler Restylane that women of a certain age pump into their faces? That’s HA! I use a moisturizer with HA and I still use HA everyday for my arthritis, 140 mg a day as a capsule.  And  I will just have to put up with the side effect of  younger looking skin.

‘Tis the season to overindulge. Drinking too much can make you feel like Santa dropped a lump of coal into your skull. So how can you avoid  getting a ho-ho-horrible hangover? There are many strategies that work.

Coconut water is loaded with potassium. It works even better if you do it before bed. It’s nature’s version of a sports drink, and nature does it better those gaudy colored things in the convenience store fridge. At the very least, a glass of old fashioned H2O is an essential pre-sleep, post-partying ritual. Hydration is KEY!

Take a multi-vitamin. A good, hi-potency multi, not a Centrum or a Flintstones. You’ll need something high in the B vitamins, so consider the Source of Life or the Healthy Appetites brands. This also works better if you take them before retiring for the night. With a big glass of water, or coconut water, or …
A green drink such as Green Vibrance or Evergreen frozen wheat grass. Throw it in a glass of water, coconut water or fruit juice. It will help replenish minerals, it’s loaded with anti-oxidants, and it’ll help you rehydrate.

Spicy foods, containing cayenne, turmeric, and ginger, help too. Cayenne is a circulatory tonic and encourages the brain to release endorphins. Turmeric is a great and ginger is one of the best herbs for nausea or headaches.

“Ilene and Jeff Hills Talk Natural Hangover Remedies”

Sip a glass of green tea, or herb tea. Try this. Brew a green tea bag and a ginger tea bag together, using twice the water since you’re using two bags (12 to 16 ounces of water as opposed to 6 to 8 ounces) and add a teaspoon of honey, which has some of its own healing properties.

Take Activated Charcoal, prior to bed, and if you can be so disciplined, one capsule every 4 drinks or so when celebrating. Charcoal absorbs toxins (and nutrients and medications, so keep that in mind if you are on a pharmaceutical.) If you do this, you may want to save that multi-vitamin until the morning.
Milk Thistle is an herb that protects the liver and helps produce glutathione, the anti-oxidant amino acid that guards that organ. Artichoke is the French remedy for hangovers. It is also a renown liver tonic. Your going to need your liver to be firing on all cylinders to detoxify system of those holiday party Jello shots.

The amino acid NAC, N-Acytl-Cysteine, is a potent liver detoxifier. This is what they would give you at the hospital if you overdosed on Tylenol.

And on that subject, both NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen, and the pain reliever acetaminophen, are not so great after a night of drinking. NSAIDs are rough on the stomach lining, especially after you’ve roughed up your insides with adult beverages. Acetaminophen is very liver toxic, so why add gas to the fire after an evening of treating your liver like a punching bag.

The “greasy meal” cure has little scientific support. But if your stomach can handle it and it makes you happy, go ahead and indulge. Throw some cayenne or hot sauce on those eggs and accompany them with plenty of hydrating beverages. Eggs yolks contain cysteine too, that will help battle some of alcohol’s toxic effects.
That morning-after “hair of the dog” Bloody Mary or mimosa isn’t a great idea either. It may temporarily take the edge off (or make you hurl, you never know) but it just adds insult to injury, in your body’s opinion. It just delays the inevitable, so suck it up and use one of the previously listed remedies. Your liver, your head, and your stomach will thank you.

This week I had a few women customers buying gluten free doughnuts claiming they had read eating the Gluten Free way helps you lose weight.  I did some research, mostly women’s magazines, and they do tout ”Going gluten-free helps to eliminate symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating and excessive gas. Yes, that is TRUE…if you have a sensitivity to gluten….they don’t mention that part.

The magazines also  claim a gluten free diet is also low in carbohydrates, therefore making it very effective for those wanting to lose excess weight. In the past a lack of gluten free products led to a diet that cut out white sugar and white flour…however, don’t they know GF has come a long way? We now have delicious GF doughnuts, cakes , pies, breads, mac and cheese-every fattening carby thing regular people eat.

Many Celiacs (like me) found they gained weight the first year of being diagnosed because not only do we start absorbing nutrients (wonderful) we also start absorbing calories as well!

After explaining these facts to my doughnuts buyers what did they do? Looked at me like I was the devil  and bought them anyway.

Moral of the story? People will believe what they want to believe as long as it involves doughnuts.

Cinnamon and Type 2 Diabetes

When you have type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar levels occur when glucose is prevented from entering cells of your body – the liver, muscle cells, and fat cells. Insulin is produced by your pancreas in response to elevated blood glucose levels. Upon entering your bloodstream, it signals the body’s cells to take up the excess glucose until your levels are restored to normal. When insulin molecules bind to the insulin receptors on your cell walls, tiny molecular “doors” open up and allow glucose molecules to pass through. If there is a glitch in this system, the ”doors” don’t respond to the insulin signal, preventing the glucose from entering your cells. The glucose is knocking, but your cell aren’t answering.

This condition is a common consequence of obesity. It is referred to as insulin resistance, or Syndrome X, or pre-diabetes. Your pancreas tries to compensate by making more insulin. Eventually your pancreas is unable to keep up this heightened demand and starts making less insulin.

Researchers at the Human Nutrition Research Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture examined extracts of 49 culinary and medicinal plants to see how well they could mimic the effects of insulin. They found in laboratory tests that cinnamon was far more effective than any other plant. Not only did it increase the uptake of glucose by cells, but it also stimulated the synthesis of glycogen. Glycogen is a form of glucose that is stored primarily in the liver and muscle tissues, which your body uses when you place a heavy demand on it for energy, such as when you exercise.

In addition, a 2003 study on cinnamon done in Pakistan, showed lower levels of fasting glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol after 40 days with levels continuing to drop for 20 days after that. The study showed that as little as a gram of cinnamon a day was sufficient to achieve these results. Researchers at Tel Aviv University found that cinnamon extracts were able to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in mice! In some studies, cinnamon has shown an amazing ability to stop medication-resistant yeast infections. This wonder spice may be able to fend off diabetes, high cholesterol, Alzheime’sr and keep yeast at bay!

Some studies used powdered cinnamon cassia, which is not considered “true” cinnamon. Most table cinnamon, the stuff you’ve been sprinkling on your toast and oatmeal, is cinnamon cassia. People using pharmaceutical blood-thinners need to use this form of the spice with caution. It contains coumarins, plant chemicals that can have a blood-thinning effect.

A safer alternative would be to use a supplement made from true cinnamon, which doesn’t contain any coumarins, or an herbal water extract of cinnamon cassia, since the process removes the coumarins. These are typically taken twice a day, after meals.

It’s that time again. Back to school! Despite what that TV commercial says, if your child is stressed, anxious, or having difficulties with concentration, it’s not the most wonderful time of the year. Not for the child, not for the parents.

There are some quick, easy, and safe ways to help your little scholars. And you stressed out and not-so-focused parents. You first line of defense is Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA which is needed for brain development as much as calcium is required for bone growth. DHA, to put it simply, allows your brain cells to communicate, both within the individual cell and between the cells. It is also vital to memory storage. You can’t learn if you can remember!

Based on international guidelines, experts recommend that children 2-3 years old get a total of 433mg of DHA and EPA, the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish and fish oil supplements. A minimum of 145mg of that should be DHA. Four to six-year-olds need 600mg of DHA/EPA with a minimum of 200mg of DHA. Everyone 7 years and older, including adults get 650mg combined EPA and DHA, with a minimum of 220mgs of DHA.

Pregnant women, the ultimate “home-schoolers”, should strive for a minimum of 300mg of DHA to help the developing brain in their “one-womb schoolhouse”. Check the supplement facts label to see how much DHA and EPA is in each serving.

The class bully just called you ”Fat Head”? What a nice guy! Thanks for noticing! The human brain is made up of appoximately 60 percent fats. Is your child’s diet  filled with sources of bad fats like French fries, potato chips, cream-filled golden Devil’s Food deserts that rhyme with “Stinkies”, and other junk foods? They could be headed for trouble with lack of concentration and aggravate existing learning disabilities. Good fats compete with bad fats for absorbtion and utilization. Limit the intake of trans fats and fats from red meat while consuming enough good fats, from salmon, sardines, walnuts, flaxseeds and Omega-3 supplements. Extra credit! Good fats raise your HDL, the ”good cholesterol.”

If you child is having issues with anxiety there’s a wonderful supplement called L-theanine. It’s an amino acid derived from green tea. It’s so safe there’s a supplement company that sells a chewable 50mg L-theanine tablet for kids, shaped like dinosaurs. L-theanine is not only an anxiety reducer, but also a mood enhancer. It produces significant increases in serotonin and dopamine concentrations in the brain. In addition, L-theanine increases alpha waves and alertness.

Calmer, happier, more alert students? Thats an A+ for you, L-theanine! As little as 50mgs can work for the elementary schoolers, while high school kids and adults can take up to 400mgs, in divided doses. It has been shown to be safe at up to 1000mgs per day, but over 400mgs it takes on a more sedative effect. DHA and L-theanine have both been shown in studies to help with ADHD, too.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder in the world, with 20 percent of North American adults reporting symptoms of the condition. I was misdiagnosed with IBS for 20 years, come to find out I really had Celiac disease…but, that’s another story.

Peppermint oil is widely used for irritable bowel syndrome. For many, it reduces the abdominal pain and bloating of IBS. How? By blocking the movement of calcium into muscle cells in the intestines and easing excessive muscle contraction there. Peppermint also eliminates excess gas in the intestines, in turn equaling relief from the pain!

You can’t use peppermint essential oil, but rather the enteric-coated softgel capsules which will survive stomach acid and be delivered to your intestines intact.

Because IBS can strike at anytime, not a bad idea to carry a few around with you…just in case!

Any side effects you ask? Yes, one…A minty fresh colon :)

Imagine…Your most delicious recipes delighting family and guests while using only half the fat!

Can chia seeds cut half the butter/oil shortening from your recipes? Yes!

Every tiny seed is packed with fiber, omega-3 oil, anti-oxidants, complete protein. So you may be saying to yourself  “Sure, these sound healthy, but what does this have to do with my most delicious brownie recipe?” When you mix the seeds with water or any other liquid, they hydrate. This means that each seed will form a big bead of gel around the outside; which is made of whatever liquid you hydrated them in. The gel has the consistency of a gelatin snack, and is not easily removed from the seed’s surface

Chia seeds contain high amounts of omega-3 and fiber, and help to stabilize blood sugar levels by slowing down digestion. This can help to reduce food cravings and improve mood. I add chia to my shakes, eggs, muffins, and yogurt. They’re small and tasteless…making them very versatile.

This constant dark rainy weather in the North East is making me SAD!!! I’m upping my vitamin D3 to 5000 international units a day. It’s a cheap safe way to lift those weather related blues.   Low vitamin D has long been linked to depression. Experts now believe a lack of vitamin D might also contribute to other mental health problems such as personality disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Recent studies have shown that vitamin D3, the form found in health-food stores, is the preferred form . Let me explain, supplemental vitamin D comes in two forms: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D3 is a more potent form of vitamin D, vitamin D2 has a shorter shelf life, and its metabolites bind with protein poorly, making it less effective.

Oddly, the form of vitamin D used in prescription products is the less bio-available D2.
If you’re already taking a D supplement, look at the bottle…if it’s D3 you’re all set and it’s safe to take 5000iu’s a day.

D3 comes in many fun forms now…peppermint or chocolate chewables, topical creams, liquids and soft gels. Best of all, it’s inexpensive. Cheap, safe and your bones will be happier too!

Last week on our local radio station we talked about why taking CoQ10 supplements may help you live longer and how it also prevents certain side effects from common cholesterol-lowering drugs. The response was overwhelming. I was born with a hole in my heart and have been taking this supplement for years. I recently found out the hole had healed its self….can’t say it’s because of CoQ10, but it didn’t hurt. You’ll also see CoQ10 in beauty products being touted as anti-aging.

CoQ10 is a fat-soluble vitamin-like substance present in every cell of the body and serves as a coenzyme for several of the key enzymatic steps in the production of energy within the cell. For example, because CoQ10 is essential for energy production, it helps your heart pump more efficiently.  Researchers have found that this incredible supplement treats heart disease, increases energy levels, boosts the immune system and provides antioxidant benefits.   It also functions as an antioxidant which …is important in its clinical effects.

It is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods but is particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver and kidney, as well as peanuts, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and beef.   To put CoQ10 in perspective regarding dietary habits, one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef, or two and one half pounds of peanuts, provide 30 mg of CoQ10.

If you want to use it theraputically, obviously a supplement would be the wise choice, unless you really love sardines. It has no known toxicity or side effects. CoQ10 is also synthesized in all tissues and in healthy individuals normal levels are maintained both by CoQ10.intake and by the body’s synthesis of CoQ10. We all have CoQ10 in our bodies…which we lose as we age.

How does CoQ10 help if you’re on a statin? (or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Unfortunately, your body’s CoQ10 production is dependant on the very thing that statins inhibit. While you do something potentially helpful by reducing your cholesterol, you do something definitely harmful by reducing your body’s pool of CoQ10.

“The heart is usually the first to feel statin associated CoQ10 depletion because of its extremely high energy demands. Physicians are seeing this as cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure but chronic fatigue is also being reported and we must remember that every cell in the body is dependent upon adequate energy reserves.” (from Dr. Duane Graveline, MD)

One important clinical study, for example, found that people who received daily CoQ10 supplements within 3 days of a heart attack were significantly less likely to experience subsequent heart attacks and chest pain. In addition, these same patients were less likely to die of heart disease than those who did not receive the supplements. (from UMM.edu )

In fact, after reviewing 12 clinical studies, researchers concluded that CoQ10 has the potential to lower systolic blood pressure by up to 17 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 10 mm Hg, without significant side effects. (from UMM.edu )

Taking CoQ10 supplements can correct the deficiency caused by statin medications without affecting the medication’s positive effects on cholesterol levels. Plus, studies show that CoQ10 supplementation may decrease the muscle pain associated with statin treatment.

Medications that can lower the levels of CoQ10 in the body include statins for cholesterol , including atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol, and simvastatin (Zocor), fibric acid derivatives for cholesterol, including gemfibrozil (Lopid), beta-blockers for high blood pressure, such as atenolol (Tenormin), labetolol (Normodyne), metoprolol (Lopressor or Toprol), and propranolol (Inderal), and tricyclic antidepressant medications, including amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), and imipramine (Tofranil). MSM (between 4 and 10 grams a day) is useful in treating asthma and allergies by regulating the fluid that covers the airway surface of the lungs, and by preventing an inflammatory response. I’ve been doing 10 grams a day since September and NO MORE INHALER!!!

MSM is safe (even if you’re on medication)…..side effects for me have been….faster
growing hair/ nails, softer skin and less creaky joints. It’s my MIRACLE!

Here’s the list of ailments the book The Miracle of MSM by Dr. Stanley Jacob says
MSM relieves:
Allergies..including mold which is hardest to beat
Arthritis
Chronic back pain
Chronic headache
Fibromyalgia
Tendintis and bursitis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
TMJ
Post-traumatic pain and inflammation
Plantar fasciitis
Heavy metal detoxification
Hair grows incredibly fast
Helps brittle nails
Severe back pain
Bursitis
Interstital cystitis
Psoriasis
Makes skin so soft… beauty product as well as a health product!!

New uses include for lupus, snoring, breast cancer, colon cancer, parasites, muscle
soreness and cramps, diabetes, eye health, stress and mental disorders.
For Allergies: Msm does not act as a anti-histamine substance, that inhibits histamine production. It’s effectiveness is due to it’s ability to block the receptivity of histamine in the sensitive tissue of the mucus membranes of nasal passages. This process is believed to prevent the histamine from creating the inflammation, swelling, and fluid build-up that can come with allergies. MSM does not produce any serious side effects, unlike prescription medications and over the counter pain killers, and there are no known drug interactions.you want to do 6000mgs a day. That’s 3 caps in the morning and 3 caps at night. You want to split up the dose because MSM only stays in the body 12 hours.

You might be thinking you can’t use MSM because you have a “sulfur allergy.” That is a misconception: sulfur is an element, the third most abundant mineral
in the human body. It’s not possible to be allergic to sulfur because it has no protein component. When people say they are “allergic to sulfur”, what they really
mean is that they are allergic or sensitive to certain sulfur-containing substances, most notably to sulfa antibiotics (sulfonamides) or to sulfites (preservatives
used in wines and some foods), or to foods with a high sulfur content (broccoli or cauliflower). Individuals with allergies to sulfa drugs or to sulfites do not experience problems taking MSM, because apart from sulfur, MSM bears no relation to these substances.
